Overview
Introduction
AVIF is a modern, highly efficient image format, but not every tool or workflow supports it yet.
This converter decodes an AVIF file using your browser's own native support and re-encodes it as a universally compatible PNG.
What Is AVIF to PNG Converter?
A format converter that leans on the browser's built-in AVIF decoder (via createImageBitmap, the same mechanism the shared PNG upload panel already uses for every supported format) rather than a hand-rolled decoder, since AV1-based AVIF decoding is genuinely complex and already implemented natively.
The pure lib function only validates the already-decoded pixel buffer; all actual AVIF parsing is delegated to the browser.
How AVIF to PNG Converter Works
The uploaded AVIF file is handed to the browser's createImageBitmap API, which decodes it using the platform's native AV1/AVIF codec support, then painted onto an off-screen canvas to extract raw RGBA pixel data.
Those pixels are validated and cloned by a pure function, then handed to the standard PNG preview/download panel for lossless re-encoding.
When To Use AVIF to PNG Converter
Use it when you have an AVIF image but need a PNG for a tool, platform, or workflow that doesn't yet support the newer format.
It's also useful for extracting a specific AVIF's exact pixel data for further editing in a PNG-only image editor.
Often used alongside PNG to AVIF Converter and PNG to HEIF Converter.
Features
Advantages
- Relies on the browser's own native, battle-tested AVIF decoder rather than a hand-rolled one, so decoding is fast and accurate.
- Runs entirely client-side; the uploaded file never leaves your browser.
- Fully preserves the decoded image's alpha channel.
Limitations
- Decode success depends on your specific browser's AVIF support; very old browsers may not be able to open the file at all.
- Any quality loss from AVIF's lossy compression already happened at encode time and can't be recovered by this conversion.
Examples
Best Practices & Notes
Best Practices
- Use a modern, up-to-date browser for the most reliable AVIF decode support.
- If the file fails to load, verify it's a genuine AVIF and not simply misnamed — try opening it directly in a new browser tab first.
Developer Notes
convertAvifPixelsToPng is a thin validate-and-clone pure function; all real decoding work is delegated to the browser's native createImageBitmap, the same architecture already used by webp-to-png-converter for a format with similarly strong native decode support.
AVIF to PNG Converter Use Cases
- Converting a modern AVIF photo for use in a PNG-only workflow
- Extracting pixel data from an AVIF asset for further editing
- Sharing an AVIF image with someone whose tools don't yet support the format
Common Mistakes
- Assuming every browser can decode AVIF — support varies, especially on older devices.
- Expecting the PNG to look 'better' than the source AVIF — this conversion can't recover detail already lost to AVIF's lossy compression.
Tips
- If decoding fails, try opening the AVIF file directly in a browser tab to confirm your browser actually supports the format before troubleshooting further.
- For a completely lossless workflow end to end, source images as PNG from the start rather than round-tripping through AVIF.
