Introduction
This tool converts a PNG into a real, spec-compliant GIF file, implementing the actual LZW compression algorithm GIF requires rather than faking or approximating the format.
Because GIF is fundamentally a 256-color palette format, some visual difference from the source PNG is expected and explained clearly in the result.
What Is PNG to GIF Converter?
A client-side GIF encoder that quantizes an uploaded PNG's colors to a 216-entry uniform color cube (plus one reserved index for transparency), then LZW-compresses the resulting palette-index stream exactly as the GIF89a specification requires.
The output is a genuine, complete GIF file: signature, logical screen descriptor, global color table, an optional Graphics Control Extension for transparency, image descriptor, and LZW image data.
How PNG to GIF Converter Works
Each pixel's RGB is quantized by rounding each channel to one of 6 levels, mapping it into a 216-color palette; pixels with low alpha are instead assigned a reserved transparent palette index.
The resulting stream of palette indices is compressed with a real LZW encoder (variable-width codes, dictionary resets, GIF's byte sub-block framing) and assembled into a complete GIF89a file.
